With unemployment at 5.5% (first quarter 2007) and basically flat for the last 6 months, one could conclude that labour supply and demand are fairly evenly matched in the UK at this time. Pay statistics bear this out, as pay including bonuses has stayed flat over the last 12 months, although the deviation has been wide. Interestingly, the pay excluding bonuses has trended down about one-half percent. Unfortunately during this time of flat pay growth, consumer prices have trended upward about one percent over the last 12 months.
However, there are stil plenty of jobs being advertized, which I would conclude means that there is a lot of job turnover - leave one job (voluntarily or otherwise), go to another. As of the end of March 2007, there are about 363,000 unfilled job openings. Unsuprizingly, the vast majority of these jobs (over 75%) require extended education. The way I read these statistics is that while now is a time you can go and find a job if you have the education, it is not the time to find your perfect job. The statistics make the economy appear "meta-stable", and it could go any which way, at this point. I would think it is best to find a job that can pay your bills, and wait for a more sunny day to be picky. If you do not have an extended education, then I would suggest you go back and get some more schooling and/or training. Another interesting point is that there are a lot of different kinds of jobs available. As I mentioned previously, they are definitely centered about the higher-education professions, but there is a wide variety of jobs being advertized. The top job roles currently looking to be filled in the UK are for managers and management, both of which require extensive education in order to even be considered. However, there are available entry level jobs, and jobs that require minimal education (customer service, for example). But, there is a lot of competition for those jobs from younger workers and those with just the bare minimum education. Additional articles will be added to this website about jobs and job opportunities as time goes on. In uncertain economic like today, education is always a good option. With good planning and a little luck, education can let you can move up the ladder to better jobs, regardless of your age or where you start. |
